Prep the sweet potatoes. Peel the potatoes and remove the skin. Cut into 2” chunks (be careful when cutting into smaller pieces). Rinse under cold water and drain.
Add the potatoes to a pot and add enough cold water to cover the potatoes.
Place the pot on the stove and allow the water to come to a boil over high heat.
Stir the potatoes throughout the cooking time and cook the potatoes until tender. The potatoes should be soft but not mushy.
Once the potatoes are done, drain them in a colander in the sink. Allow them to sit for a few seconds and allow the water to evaporate.
In the meantime, warm up the milk or half and half.
Next, melt some butter in a pot over medium heat. Add the sweet potatoes and use a masher to mash the potatoes.
Once the potatoes are mashed, stir in the milk or half and half until the potatoes are creamy and smooth.
Season with salt, pepper, cinnamon, and a pinch of brown sugar. Stir everything together.
Do a taste test and make any adjustments if needed. Serve immediately.
