To make these fancy mashed sweet potatoes, you will start out by peeling or removing the skin. Once the skin is removed, I like to cut the potatoes into smaller pieces. but be careful when cutting into smaller pieces, the potatoes can be a little tough to cut. Before cooking the potatoes, I like to rinse them off under cold water a few times. Next, place them into a pot and add enough water to cover the potatoes. Allow the water to come to a boil and stir throughout the cooking time. You will Boil the sweet potatoes until tender. They should be soft but not mushy- you can use a fork to piece the potatoes and check for doneness. Once they are soft, drain the potatoes into a colander.
Next, melt some butter in a pot over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the potatoes to the pot and use a masher to mash the potatoes. Add some warm milk or half and half to the potatoes until they have a smooth and creamy consistency. It only takes a few ingredients to season the mashed sweet potatoes. I like to add a sprinkle of Cajun seasoning, black pepper, cinnamon, and a pinch of brown sugar. The sweet potatoes had a great savory taste with a hint of sweetness. I recommend adding a small pinch of brown sugar and cinnamon. No need to add too much, you just want a small hint of sweetness and not an overpowering sweet flavor. If you want to keep it simple and more healthy- just season with salt, pepper, and a small pinch of cinnamon.
