It makes for such a delicious comfort meal, especially for us Southern folks who love a good wholesome meal.
Seared to perfection! These Tender and well-seasoned steaks are simmered to perfection in a rich savory hearty brown gravy. The gravy is filled with garlic, mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions that give this dish such a good veggie boost. The gravy is so flavorful, luscious, and creamy. I like to make extra gravy to pour over my rice or potatoes. A good tasting Gravy makes a meal complete.
The meat is so soft, tender and falls apart perfectly.
It’s melt in your mouth delicious!
Steak or chicken that’s cooked and smothered in gravy is such a southern tradition. But what makes this dish awesome, is that it’s so affordable. Most of the ingredients should be a pantry staple, so if anything you should only need to pick up a few ingredients from the grocery store. For this recipe you can use whatever cut of meat that you like. I’m a fan of sirloin steaks because they are inexpensive and super affordable. Especially if you’re cooking for a family or a small crowd. You can use thin or petite sirloin steaks- whichever your budget allows.
For this recipe all you have to do is add a few squirts of the Worcestershire sauce and season lightly with the dry seasonings. I like to season both sides of the steak. Be moderate, but there’s no need to over season. I like to use the low sodium beef broth when simmering my steaks. But feel free to use water instead. While you simmer the steaks, make sure you keep an eye on the liquid. It will reduce and you may need to add extra broth or water.
Note that the cooking time will vary, it depends on the cut of meat & thickness. It could take up to two hours to cook. I recommend that you allow the meat to simmer on low medium for a few hours. But allow the meat to cook until it is super tender and melt in your mouth. In the last 15 to 20 minutes of cooking time, I like to add the mushrooms and do a taste test of the gravy. For the gravy make any adjustments if needed. And don’t forget to add the cornstarch slurry because that is what will help give you a hearty thick brown gravy.
This hearty smothered steak & mushrooms gravy dish is so good.
It’s super affordable and makes such a flavorful meal.
Just pair over a bed of rice or creamy mashed potatoes.
I hope you enjoy this delicious and super fulfilling southern recipe!
