Creamy Smoked Gouda & Cheddar Cheese Grits Recipe

This creamy cheese grits recipe stays in heavy rotation at my house. Made perfect with a little sprinkle of black pepper and melted butter on top. A Southern stable that’s rich, a little thick, and never runny. It’s the perfect base for a shrimp & grits dish or smothered pork chops and gravy dish.

My recipe is a great tutorial on how to make southern style grits. The grits are simmered in chicken broth until it’s at a desired thickness. Once it’s at the level you like, add some half & half, smoked Gouda, and cheddar cheese to bring out that creamy texture. Anyone that’s familiar with southern grits know that it’s one of the creamiest and most rich in flavor.

This smoked Gouda & cheddar cheese grits recipe is delicious and easy to make. It’s a great side dish to serve for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner.

You can pair this grits recipe with some fried bacon, fried fish or get bold and serve with some smothered pork chops & gravy to make a delicious meal. I hope you enjoy these delicious grits recipe as much as I do!

Note: **You don’t need to add salt because the chicken broth has salt in it.

Tips:

  • For thicker grits decrease broth by 1 cup; for thinner grits increase broth.

  • Cheese: add as much cheese that you like. It’s based on your preference and taste buds.

Ingredients

Recipe based on 4 Servings:

  • 1 Cup Grits
  • 3 to 4 Cups Swanson Chicken Broth
  • Black Pepper (For taste)
  • Splash of Half & Half (Or 1/2 cup)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup Smoked Gouda Cheese (shredded)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup Cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 2 Tbs Unsalted butter

Tips: For thicker grits decrease the broth by 1 cup; for thinner grits increase broth. Cheese: add as much cheese that you like. It’s based on your preference and taste buds.

Instructions

  • On medium high heat add the chicken broth to a medium sized pot.
  • Allow the chicken broth to come to a slight boil.
  • Slowly stir or whisk in the grits.
  • Allow the grits to cook for 15 to 20 minutes
  • *Note: It’s important that you consistently stir the grits throughout cooking time to prevent burning and having lumpy grits.
  • *Note: If the grits start “popping” too much, you can reduce the heat to low & cover with a lid.
  • When the grits have thickened up to your desired preference- add some butter, splash of half & half and stir.
  • Once the grits are done, add your smoked Gouda & cheddar cheese. Allow the cheese to melt & stir consistently.
  • Serve the grits immediately or while hot. Enjoy!
